CringeKev just dropped his debut solo comedy album, Cracker Rap, a full-blown parody GTA radio station built from scratch with songs, skits, and commercials all set in his own version of Vice City. The idea took shape over years of comedy writing dating back to 2019, mixed with a long-held fantasy of getting hired by Rockstar to actually make these things for a living.
What is your channel called and what is it about?
CringeKev is my name, and I just released my debut solo comedy album called Cracker Rap. I created a parody GTA 6 radio station, with songs, skits and commercials.
When did you start it? What motivated you at the beginning?
The songs I started making when I first started comedy in 2019. And with the hype and anticipation of the new GTA 6 video game coming out I thought packaging an album as a parody radio station would be unique and fun. I always thought getting hired by Rockstar to make these radio stations would be an amazing job, so I made this album as sort of a pilot.
Who were you inspired by? Any influences?
The radio station influence is heavily GTA-inspired, as it takes place in “Vice City”. I tried to make the commercials and skits bizarre humour that profits real-life issues as they do in the game. The actual songs I tried to make the theme suburban white guy. The radio station is called Kulture Vulture Radio, so I try and parody musical styles from different popular artists such as The Weeknd, Kendrick Lamar, Biggie Smalls, Drake and more.
How would you describe your audience?
My audience is a mix of Toronto-based people, moms and blue-collar workers.
What is your creative process? Do you have people who work with you?
For this album, the creative writing happens all in the studio. Everything was freestyled in the studio, made with engineer and Juno Award-winning songwriter Johnny Hills. Working with him was perfect, as he could help making the songs sound modern, and I brought the comedy writing and delivery.
How do you monetize your content? Do you also have another job?
I monetize with brand deals, streaming/ royalty’s from songs.
What is your favourite piece of content you have created?
This album, Cracker Rap, is the piece I’m most proud of. It is meant to be listened to as one project, and I’m very happy with how cohesive the project sounds.
What is the best part about what you do? What is the worst part?
Making people laugh is fun. Doing stand-up is peak comedy. But creating a music album and radio station is a fun writing process. The worst part about what I do is the costs it takes to put a project like this together. Funding a creative process like this is always an obstacle.
What are your future plans for your channel?
I would love to get this album into Rockstar’s hands and potentially expand the concept into a full-length radio station that would be included in GTA 6.
