Behind the Scenes of Ontario Casino Reviews: A Conversation with Casino.org’s Elsa Fiott

When Ontario launched its regulated iGaming market in April 2022, it marked a major shift in Canada’s gambling landscape. Private operators were finally able to enter a space that had long been limited to provincially run platforms. With that expansion came more choice for players — and more need for clarity. As hundreds of online casinos began competing for attention, players started asking a new question: who can they trust?

To understand how casino review sites assess and rate operators in Canada’s tightly regulated market, we spoke with Casino.org Canada’s Elsa Fiott; part of a team who offer online casino reviews by experts in Canada. Her role involves testing dozens of casinos each month, dissecting everything from payout speeds to security protocols.

What follows is an inside look at how expert reviews are actually built.

“We break down what matters most”

Elsa explains that reviewing casinos isn’t just about browsing a website and assigning a score. Casino.org follows a structured 25-step process that examines everything from sign-up to withdrawal.

As the site puts it:

“Our expert casino reviews follow a strict 25-step process, analyzing games, bonuses, payments, security, and more. We also consider the casino’s history and existing players’ opinions. Essentially, we break down what matters most, so you can find the best gambling sites with confidence.”

For Elsa, that process starts with hands-on testing. She registers accounts, verifies payment flows, tests withdrawals, and checks whether promotional terms match what’s advertised. “You can’t review a casino properly without experiencing the full journey,” she explains.

Each month, the team dedicates over 100 hours to testing, fact-checking terms, verifying licences, and peer-reviewing content before it goes live.

Safety comes before bonuses

Players often gravitate toward eye-catching welcome packages. Elsa, however, looks elsewhere first.

“Before anything else, I want to know if the site is legitimate,” she says. That means confirming valid licensing — particularly important in Ontario, where casinos must hold authorization through iGaming Ontario — and checking for SSL encryption, secure banking protocols, and responsible gambling tools.

Casino.org’s review framework emphasizes that licensing alone isn’t enough. As their methodology states:

“Top-tier casinos don’t just rely on licensing either. We check for SSL encryption, two-factor authentication, and secure banking options too.”

Elsa also looks for third-party testing seals, such as eCOGRA certification, and verifies that random number generators (RNGs) are independently audited. Responsible gambling tools are non-negotiable: deposit limits, time-outs, and self-exclusion must be easily accessible. If they’re buried or incomplete, the rating suffers.

Payments: where reputations are made

As Casino.org’s payments expert, Elsa pays special attention to transaction speed and flexibility. “A casino can promise anything in its marketing,” she notes, “but payout speed is where you see how serious they are about customers.”

She checks the number of available payment methods, minimum deposit and withdrawal thresholds, processing times, and any hidden fees. Ideally, she says, players should be able to deposit with as little as $10 and withdraw with reasonable minimums.

In Casino.org’s February playtest, Elsa reviewed Spin Palace Casino and highlighted practical details players often miss. Reflecting on the experience, she noted:

“While the welcome bonus might not be the most lucrative on our list, I could claim it for just $10… Spin Palace accepts 17 payment methods, including crypto, with credit card deposits starting at $5.”

For Elsa, those thresholds matter just as much as bonus size. Fast withdrawals — particularly same-day payouts — signal operational efficiency and financial stability.

Beyond numbers: evaluating the player experience

While some casinos boast libraries of 10,000+ games, Elsa stresses that quality matters more than volume.

“In Canada, top casinos typically offer 3,000 or more games,” she explains. “But we’re looking at variety, reputable developers, and payout rates — not just raw numbers.”

A strong platform should include over 1,000 slots, 100+ table games, live dealer options, and progressive jackpots. Providers such as Play’n GO and Pragmatic Play add credibility. Mobile compatibility is equally important; at least 90% of the game library should run smoothly on smartphones.

User experience testing also includes navigation, loading speeds, bonus clarity, and customer support responsiveness. Elsa often contacts support directly to evaluate wait times and the quality of assistance. “You can tell a lot about a casino by how it handles basic questions,” she says.

The regulatory balancing act

Ontario’s regulated environment adds complexity to the review process. Compliance standards are strict, and policies can evolve quickly. Elsa follows regulatory developments closely to ensure reviews remain current and accurate.

“Markets don’t stand still,” she explains. “New operators launch, regulations shift, and terms change. Our job is to keep monitoring — not just publish a review and forget about it.”

That continuous reassessment is essential in a province where consumer protection is central to the licensing framework.

Staying unbiased in a competitive industry

Reviewing casinos objectively isn’t always easy. Many reviewers are players themselves and naturally have preferences. Elsa acknowledges that maintaining neutrality requires discipline.

“We rely on structured criteria and peer review to keep things fair,” she says. Ratings are based on weighted categories — security, payments, games, bonuses, mobile performance, and support — rather than personal taste.

The mission remains clear: help players make informed decisions and avoid risky operators. Casinos that fail to meet standards are flagged or blacklisted.

What players often overlook

According to Elsa, players frequently focus on large bonuses while ignoring the finer print.

“Wagering requirements, withdrawal caps, and payout times can completely change the value of a bonus,” she explains. A smaller promotion with fair terms may ultimately be more beneficial than a massive headline offer.

Customer service is another overlooked factor. Reliable 24/7 live chat, transparent FAQs, and responsive complaint handling are strong indicators of trustworthiness. “If something goes wrong,” Elsa notes, “you want to know someone will actually respond.”

A growing reliance on expert guidance

As Ontario’s iGaming market continues to mature, the demand for independent reviews is only increasing. With over 130 Canadian casinos reviewed and hundreds of bonuses assessed each month, Casino.org positions itself as a filter in an increasingly crowded space.

For Elsa, the responsibility is clear. “Players rely on these reviews to decide where to deposit real money,” she says. “That’s not something we take lightly.”

Transparency, structured testing, and ongoing monitoring form the backbone of that responsibility. And as Ontario’s regulated market evolves, so too will the work happening behind the scenes — quietly shaping how players navigate the province’s expanding online casino landscape.
