A Wellness Centre May be the Answer for our Walking Wounded

What the heck are the Walking Wounded? I wondered when the Jaconello Wellness Centre in Toronto asked me the question, are you one of the walking wounded? Maybe. I could be, I thought as I invited myself to visit their clinic in September 2016.

paulaEwa Pringle, the community outreach manager at the clinic defines the Walking Wounded as the folks who fall in the gap. “Much like the zombies seen in popular TV shows,” she says, “these people are not sick enough for hospital treatment, and yet they feel terrible every day.”  The Walking Wounded have found themselves stuck in the gap with most of these conditions having their roots in a ‘high toxic body load’ (which their compromised immune systems cannot ‘off load’)  that comes from living in and being surrounded by the toxic soup of our modern existence.

Torontonians are lucky to live in a city filled with medical specialists of every description, but Ewa believes (and has all the clinic’s statistics to show), there are still some really sick people roaming around out there who can’t find help, and some of Toronto’s ‘walking wounded’ don’t even know they’re sick.

Do you have these symptoms?

The Walking Wounded - Jaconello Wellness Centre in Toronto

Jaconello Wellness Centre defines the Walking Wounded as those who,

  1. struggle along with low energy; they’re crabby and irritable as their poor health compromises their productivity and family life. They experience chronic fatigue, pain and exhaustion on a daily basis.
  2. heads feel weak, like they’re one set-of-stairs away from a migraine headache. Their brains are foggy and they have poor concentration, memory loss, and learning difficulties.
  3. labour to breathe through congested nasal passages – everyone can hear them breathing.
  4. suffer from depression and probably also often suffer from insomnia.
  5. have skin that is too easily bruised.
  6. have stiff bodies, with back pain, neck pain, and they have pain in their joints and unexplained muscle pain. They suffer from severe and unexplained swelling of the hands, feet and face.
  7.  have poor digestion and repeated attacks of mysterious `flu-like` symptoms and poor immunity.
  8. are often heard to say, they `feel sick all over`.

Staff at the Jaconello Wellness Centre are trained to spot these symptoms and together with Dr Paul Jaconello and the patient they consider alternative medicine for more health options.

Staff at Jaconello Wellness Centre, like most integrative medicine and alternative health practitioners in Canada, believe the present health care system is not well-equipped to handle special needs patients. Ewa Pringle reviewing the intake statistics at the clinic points out how frequently they see people who have been misdiagnosed as ‘mentally ill’ get treated more effectively by alternative medicine.  They believe many health issues are incorrectly labelled as psychological illnesses, and the afflicted individuals are treated officially or unofficially as mental patients.  This diagnosis often leads to the use of anti- depressants and mood altering drugs as a `solution` which seldom cures ‘the problem’.

Integrative medicine, by contrast is a discipline that addresses the symptoms as well as seeks to cure or otherwise remedy the disease that’s afflicting the ‘whole’ of these individuals.
