You’ve probably come across those couch ads on your social media by now. It seems like everyone has a Cozey couch these days. So is it just hype and influencers, or does the furniture hold up? We here at the Toronto Guardian decided to put it to the test.
Cozey is the Montreal-founded, Canadian sofa-in-a-box company that’s built its name on modular, tool-free furniture delivered straight to your door. The brand has since expanded into showrooms and pop-up locations across North America, including a Toronto showroom on Queen Street West, near Ossington, giving shoppers a chance to see its lineup in person. With an expansive online presence, Cozey aims to do for sofas what Endy once did for mattresses. Read on for our thoughts on the Cozey experience!

We’ve been curious about the Ciello XL for a while.
The XL is simply a larger version of the original Ciello sofa, with the same design and build quality but built for bigger spaces and a deeper seat than the standard size. You can also choose between a regular backrest or a high angled backrest, which offers more support if you like to lean back. We tested the modular sectional in Mocha performance fabric. The seats are deep, and the cushions sit soft without collapsing, good news if you’re the type to sink into the couch for a movie or fall asleep there with the dog.

The fabric system is the feature that sets it apart. The slipcovers come off entirely, and instead of buying a new couch when you’re tired of the colour, you order a new fabric pack and re-cover it yourself. It’s a real option for anyone who redecorates often, or just can’t commit to one look for the next decade-plus.
The same slipcovers are machine washable, which matters if you’ve got pets or kids around. Muddy paws, shedding fur, a spilled glass of wine- all of it comes out in a regular wash rather than requiring a steam cleaner or a new couch. (How do we know? We inadvertently found ourselves having to test this ourselves!)
The modular build is also suited to condo living. Each piece ships in its own box, so it’s easier to get through narrow hallways and elevators, and the sectional can be reconfigured or expanded later without starting from scratch. One thing to know going in: the sofa arrives across multiple boxes, each labelled, and while assembly is tool-free, it still took us a couple hours to get the whole sectional put together in an arrangement we liked.
You can browse the fabrics and configurations on Cozey’s website, or see them in person at the Queen Street showroom.
So is Cozey worth the hype? In this case, yes. The Ciello XL backs up the comfort and flexibility claims, and the fabric-swap system genuinely works as advertised. Assembly runs longer than expected, but that’s a small price for a couch built to change with you and your space needs.
