The sunnyside pavilion venue consists of a garden ground floor space enclosed by the buildings high walls as well as a second floor space that consist of both covered, open air hallways and two “decks” that have views of the lake and the city. Rain or shine this venue can accommodate.

Anja Schneider is not a new name in the game. She has been a member of the scene for many years with roles as a broadcaster, a producer, a world-renowned DJ and a founder of Mobilee Records. The nickname “perpetual motion machine” stuck as she is known as one of the hardest working individuals in the business. She began her musical career not in the DJ booth but in the radio booth as a producer for KissFM and then later as a radio persona for Fritz Radio. Her eclectic and good taste, a charming personality, and an engaging presentation style, made her “Dance Under The Blue Moon” program a stellar success. The program continues to air on Fritz Radio for the music loving masses of Berlin. It was through this launchpad her career as an international club DJ rose.

House Addict is a House and Techno Promotions Company based out of Toronto, Canada. This month they are celebrating their 13th anniversary of throwing electronic music shows.

We first heard about House Addict through our media partnership with their Sunset Sessions concert series. It took place on 6 dates at the historic Sunnyside Pavilion complex throughout the summer with Captive Audience. The wildly successful events also introduced me to a new scene of talented and good natured people, veterans in the Toronto House and Techno music scene.

House Addict began when Chris McKean and a few friends began DJing and hanging out at record shops in the Yonge and Wellesley area of downtown Toronto. Their first shows were in venues like Nasa Dance Pub and Element Bar on Queen West. The longer the group immersed themselves in the scene together, the stronger the bond of like-minded individuals became. A chat over beers one day led to the realization that they were all house addicts, and the name stuck.

House Addict currently holds about one show per month with things getting busier in the summer with their Sunset Sessions branded events, held alongside Richard Brooks and Captive Audience. The company prides its success on the organic relationships it has grown over the years. Forming strong bonds and trust with DJ’s, promoters, venue owners and partners, has allowed continued growth for all those involved.

The city of Toronto has been a fantastic musical canvas. The multi-culturalism of the city allows for a variation of tastes and genres of music. Over the years its allowed them to take chances and experiment with new sounds to see how it resonates on the dance floor with their patrons.

The 13th anniversary of House Addict will be celebrated with a show on Friday, October 21st at CODA nightclub in Toronto. The night will feature ELI & FUR from the Ajunadeep label with accompanying performances by Jonathan Rosa, City Kid Soul, and Sam Haze.

We recently sat down with Brent Hayward and Oswald Jackson, founders of White Label Promo, to discuss their upcoming 4 year anniversary on Labour Day weekend. Several parties will be taking place with Chus + Ceballos playing a show at Sunnyside Pavilion here in Toronto.

Who is behind White Label Promo (WLP) and how did it start?

BH: WLP started out as a podcast back in early 2011. In September of 2012, I partnered with OJ and we changed the direction to an events based company. The rest is history.

What kind of events do you throw? What music do you cater to?

OJ: Music we like and music we hope other people like is the easiest way to put it. We throw a variety of events, from our home-base of Nest nightclub, to the Proper Boat Cruise Series, to warehouse one offs to open air experiences at Sunnyside Pavilion. Something for everyone.

It’s going to be a very busy anniversary weekend for you guys. Tell us about how this weekend came about?

BH: We always throw multiple shows on this weekend. Last year we had 4 events in 48 hours. This year we wanted to return to our favourite TO outdoor venue, Sunnyside Pavilion with Chus and Ceballos. Chus and Pablo have played our anniversary weekend every year. On Sunday, it’s off to NYC as Alberto and I make our debut at Output for the official Electric Zoo afterparty. NYC is a very special place for me and I’m eager to experience Output. Big thanks to Michael Julian for the love in NYC!

Photo by Tim Sandik at Ded Pixel

Where do you draw your motivation from when it comes to booking shows?

BH: It’s places like NY that have had such an influence over my career as a DJ. NYC and Montreal are my two favourite cities to frequent. OJ and I travel a lot in order to take in experiences from around the globe that will allow us to grow both personally and professionally.

OJ: Travel and seeing production motivates me. I’ve been lucky enough to travel through Europe in the past year, checking out Ibiza, Berghain, Time Warp Germany, etc. Not to say you can recreate that vibe in Toronto, however when an artist gushes about an experience we provided for them it’s flattering especially when they play all over the world.

What changes and challenges you have you experienced this past year in the city?

BH: People are asking for a product that evolves. TO is the one of the most highly competitive markets in North America. Often there aren’t enough party goers to facilitate each show. Sometimes parties with great talent are not as busy as they should be. It’s a challenge trying to educate TO on upcoming artists because people would rather spend their money on a sure bet. Competition brings the best out in everyone and as long as it’s healthy, it also forces promoters to get creative which is great for the city.

OJ: The lack of venues in the city is challenging. Moreso on the event space front, I wish the city would be open minded like NYC or Berlin in allowing permits for special events.

Out of all the events you have produced, what were some of the stand out moments?

BH: Hosting Frankie Knuckles for the last time in Toronto. I remember picking up Frankie from the airport and seeing him in obvious pain (it was about 3 months prior to his passing) As I wheeled Frankie in his wheelchair into my car, never once did he let his discomfort show all night as he played from the heart and put on a performance I’ll never forget. Opening for Danny Tenaglia this past spring was another amazing highlight for me.

OJ: New Years Eve 2014. Brent and I were on little sleep for the 2 days leading up to the event and the days after. From production meetings, day jobs, more production meetings, etc we had a 1000+ person party with Chus and Ceballos which was a 12 hour event at Ryze. That same afternoon we flew to Montreal to surprise the boys at Stereo. Only people that love the business could have pulled off those crazy 4 days.

How is the work dynamic between you two?

OJ: We definitely play off each other’s strengths. Brent is a great people person, with soft skills, very likeable and easy to relate to. However, I’m stern, very direct and firm. When we have to give a nice message, Brent delivers it. When it’s a not so nice message, I deliver it.

Brent is very organized – he can put processes in play. I’m analytical and I love using data/trends in our event planning. When I door manage the big events he’s 100% confident in me. When he produces sound/stage build outs I’m 100% confident in him. We’re the odd couple, that’s why we work, and we’ve had a friendship since 2004 which helps.

If you could give one any advice to up and comers in the scene, what would it be?

BH: Define early on where you see yourself in the industry and work towards it. Success doesn’t come over night. Know your market, be kind, respectful, work hard and you will get to the right places. It takes a LOT of patience and dedication. If you are a good person and surround yourself with good people you will do just fine 🙂

OJ: Get off your ass and meet face to face. There are way too many people who send emails/Facebook messages asking to play or work at a venue and they’ve never even been there. Cold messaging doesn’t work. Meet the people in power face to face AND THEN ASK, not the other way around.

What lies ahead in year 5?

BH: We are already booking well into the 2017 calendar and all I can say at this point is things are looking GREAT 😉 Can’t wait to keep you all moving for another amazing year ahead.

OJ: Less sleep, bigger parties, and more enjoyment for our Toronto patrons.

There are only a few house music tic-tac-ticians that have reached ICON status in the Toronto electronic music scene, and Mark Farina is definitely one of them. Chicago native/San Fran resident boasts decades of Toronto performances, which is something you can’t really say about too many international performing dj’s/artists. And yes…. EVERY performance here is unique!

For those who know Mark, know that his rare form of performances stems from the fact that he pushes two styles of music. His four on the floor funky house style is one that can be summed up simply as party music. When he’s playing that jacking style of house, you know the party’s on 100%. The dance floor is filled, hands are in the air…. that kind of party music. Check the build-up in this mix:

On the B-side of the record, Mark’s signature mushroom jazz selections are incomparable. Mark is celebrating 25 years of this down-tempo funkadelic sound with the latest release of the mushroom jazz compilations. Mushroom Jazz 8 was released July 22, and is available here.

While Mark has played so many different venues in the city of Toronto, it’s safe to say that the most memorable ones for his fans have been at the beautiful Sunnyside Pavilion down on the lakeshore. This Saturday August 13 will be sure not to disappoint, as he makes his annual return to Sunnyside. Who knows, maybe he’ll even have a few autographed Mushroom Jazz 8 compilations for some of his fans!! P.S. Check the video of last year’s performance here.

We’re very excited to announce that the icing on the cake for this jam is the birthday celebration of Toronto veteran performer, Dirty Dale.

Dale has three things about him that are infectious: his sound, his dance moves, and his smile. Dale has 15 years of performing behind him, so you can only imagine what treats he may have in store for everyone on Saturday as well. Toronto is so fortunate to have a soul like Dale in our scene. Here’s hoping he’s got another 15 years in him to keep killing our dance floors.

Fur Coat is made up of DJs Israel Sunshine and Sergio Muñoz who are originally from Venezuela but now reside in Barcelona. They are currently on an international tour which will pass through Toronto on July 31st. Their music takes from house and techno influences as well as latin, salsa, funk and soul.

We got to chat with Fur Coat before their show in Toronto.

2016 looks as if it has been very busy for the two of you. Original productions out on Sasha’s label LNOE, Crosstown rebels, as well as remixing the likes of Edu Imbernon and Matador!! Are there any particular highlights you can tell us about?

Yes it has been very busy for the past 4 years! We are in the studio working during the week, we are touring every weekend, we are really happy! A few highlights, for this year we have a remix for Edu Imbernon that you mentioned and a remix for Matador that should be coming out next week. Also we have a remix for Nicole Moudaber coming out later this year. On original music, we have our debut EP on Watergate Records with a remix from Ruede Hagelstein and an EP on Crosstown Rebels with Vin Sol remix. We are already working on new things for next year!

What special projects do you have planned out for the remainder of 2016? Any more touring with Sasha’s LNOE brand?

As we said before thats all coming for 2016, there might be one more remix that we have to work on next week that will be announced soon. LNOE, there is already some new music planned for next year, we will announce more info soon too!

After it took so long for promoters to get you to Toronto, it’s almost like you have become residents here in the past 12 months. What are your thoughts on the electronic music scene in Toronto?

Yeah, I (Sergio) went a couple of times. The whole situation with the Visa and the work permit was complicated because of the Venezuelan passport. As a Chilean person, I don´t need a visa anymore and Israel could work it out too. So we are happy we have played a lot in Canada lately. It´s definitely one of our favourite countries to play. Last time at CODA was mindblowing! We have so many good expectations for Sunnyside Pavilion! People knows how to party in Canada, they are always open-minded and well-educated for what we are bringing in our sets.

This visit will be your debut at Sunnyside Pavilion. This is one of Toronto’s most historic event venues (built in 1924). Are there any new tracks we can expect to hear for this performance?

The venue looks amazing on photos! We can´t wait for the party! You will be listening to a lot of unreleased material, from the upcoming EPs, though to new remixes and some of the new music that we are scheduling for 2017.

Can you tell us a little bit about your Secret Community that you created?

Yes, this is direct and genuine way to communicate and give something special to our followers. A way to keep them updated and always have a more personal touch to special things we do, from recording a video, giving away a free track and sharing cool stuff with them. Anyone can be part of if by subscribing in on our socials or here http://bit.ly/FC-secretcommunity

How were the tacos in Vegas?

The Tacos were delicious aha, and the party was even better! Lots of people with good energies. They partied all the way till 5 am. It’s something that isn´t usual in the States due to licenses and closing times of venues. But people in North America are always up for a party, it has been an amazing tour so far!
