Food delivery services have exploded in Toronto with almost every possibility available. You can have groceries delivered, you can have any restaurant deliver with 3rd party apps, you can have ingredients sent to you with recipes and a meal plan or you can have pre-made meals sent to you that just need to be heated up. The latter of these is the focus of our latest featured Toronto business called Marble Meals.

Toronto Chef Karen Barbalat is excited to bring tasty food to the city of Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area. “Marble Meals is a meal service company that provides healthy, gourmet dishes prepared with the attention and care you can expect from a home cooked meal.” her website states.

Karen likens it to a personal chef who makes you weekly healthy, clean, comfort food with a seasonal menu that is updated every 3 to 4 months.

For those who are busy but still want healthy home cooked meals, Marble Meals may be the answer for you.

How many different meal variations can one expect in one month?

Our menu is on a rotating four week schedule that also changes seasonally. Every week we send out 6 different kinds of meals, so at the end of the month you have had 24 different dishes. The menu starts again at the beginning of the next month, and then that rotating menu switches seasonally.

What are the costs involved for a meat menu or a vegan menu per week? per 3-day order?

The cost per meal on a monthly subscription is $11.98, this is for both vegan and meat menu options. The cost per meal on a week by week basis is $12.75 per meal for both vegan and meat menu options. The price of your order is dependent on how many meals per week you order, with the minimum being 6 meals per week. We are giving people a great deal. Where else in the city can you get a steak dinner, prepared by a chef, for 12 bucks?

Do the meals require any prep or are they just reheat-able? What if I don’t have a microwave?

The meals require zero prep! You just heat and enjoy. The meals can be heated any way you like, using a microwave being the most convenient as the meals are delivered in microwavable containers. However, you may heat the meals in a pan over the stove, or in the oven.

When does the delivery arrive?

Deliveries go out every Monday and Thursday. For our customer’s convenience, we have four delivery windows: Monday and Thursday evenings (5:00-8:00pm) and Monday and Thursday afternoon (11:00am-2:00pm).

What areas do you serve? Plans to expand?

We currently deliver throughout Toronto, North York, Thornhill, and lower Richmond Hill. We also have a pick up location at York Muay Thai at 155 Limestone Crescent in North York. We plan to add another pick up location and expand our delivery to other parts of the GTA to include Mississauga, Brampton, Markham, and Scarborough when the time is right.

What is Kitchen 24?

Kitchen24 is Toronto’s multi-use culinary space and incubator that is a one-stop- shop for foodies. The space features a full-service venue that includes shared kitchen space, a kosher kitchen, cooking studio, cold and dry storage, boardroom, office space and communal lounge.

It has a focus on helping individuals and entrepreneurs succeed in the food service industry by providing low cost memberships to a collaborative kitchen environment. Members have various packages to choose from to fit their needs and have access to a fully equipped kitchen 24/7 that is designed for food innovation.

What kind of companies work there?

Kitchen 24 has food service and catering companies working out of there right now, they also have the facilities to accommodate small food manufacturing companies, various startup food businesses, private chef demonstrations, corporate events and much more.

Hailing from the United Kingdom, where all major food stores have offered cheap or often free food delivery for over 15 years, I was absolutely baffled that this does not seem to be a commonly used option here in Toronto. What has started to pop up, however, are companies who will offer that service for you, like Instabuggy.

Instabuggy gives you a choice of stores to pick from, including FreshCo and Sobeys (although no huge players like Loblaws, Metro or No Frills) and promises delivery within an hour.

Convenience is key here; if you are hungry and want to order a packaged lunch, Instabuggy has your back. Same goes for dinner. When it comes to a weekly grocery shop, it becomes a little trickier to filter out the extortionately priced items for the everyday value you could find at the store.

I ordered a nice bundle of items for a picnic and they were delivered very promptly indeed, leaving me very impressed with the service, which certainly does seem to be the “speediest” in Toronto. On top of that, your first order boasts free delivery, meaning it is actually more cost effective for lunch items than apps like Uber Eats and Feast.

The perfect way to use Instabuggy would be in a group lunch or dinner scenario, that way (if you are ordering beyond your first delivery) you can split the costs. Instabuggy is also pro delivering in the park, which is a fun novelty! The minimum cost to order is $35 with an additional delivery fee. The fees range from $9.99 for orders between $35 and $60, and $5,99 for orders between $60.01 and $80. Delivery is free for orders over $80.

For me, it doesn’t solve the issue of Toronto lacking in bulkier grocery delivery services, as many of the items found on the site seem to be above that of what you would pay in store. For regularly use, I would also like to know the nutritional information for various items, which is perhaps something that could be developed.

Ultimately, Instabuggy is a commodity for convenience and, with many hectic days in the city leaving many of us struggling for time, a welcome on at that.

Love cooking but hate the time it takes to prepare something nutritious and delicious? Me too. Do you wish you didn’t have to spend over an hour each week on your food shop? Traipsing around a vast food store is enough to knock the creative winds out of any budding chef. Luckily, help is at hand from HelloFresh.

Delivered straight to my door, my boyfriend and I took turns in rustling up the goods.

First up was the rosemary-walnut crusted chicken, served with salad and potatoes. I found this to be totally delicious and well beyond the standard of chicken dinner I would usually rustle up on a week night. Whilst I was totally full and satisfied, my boyfriend was angling for a few mouthfuls more, that said – this was the only dish from our box that didn’t quite plug the endless fortress that is the stomach of a 6ft 2 man in his 20s.

The next night presented my favourite meal of the lot; Pork al Mojo with Cuban rice and beans, which I very much felt was of restaurant quality. Gluten free and dairy free, this was a tasty, hearty and relatively guilt free main course and I will admit, I now have the recipe pinned to my fridge.

Finally, we had the juicy Lucy burger with onion jam and charred baby gem lettuce, which again was far more gourmet than anything I would usually create on a work night.

The Hello Fresh boxes really mixed up my meal plans, giving me a source of excitement when I got back home after work; each dish felt like an event!

Okay, so what if you don’t want to make the same thing each week? Well no worries, you can choose from weekly rotating menus on HelloFresh so you don’t have to repeat meals you have tried. That said, I am champing at the bit to perfect my al mojo!

I’ll admit, at first I was sceptical. Fresh, delicious, healthy ingredients delivered to your door with fool proof, easy-to-follow recipes….there HAS to be a catch? Surely it must cost the earth, if not, everyone would be doing it. Well, it will set you back $69, however for fresh ingredients, a sprinkle of imagination and hours of my life back, just over $11 a meal isn’t so bad. Especially when the results are so Instagramable!

For $30 off your first two boxes, visit HelloFresh on their website.
