We’re all leaning towards more “experiences” when considering our gift ideas. Speaking as a mom, I can tell you that rings true. My days have past where kids would proudly bring home hand-painted flower pots with seedlings and self-portraits inspired by Picasso. Some of my most cherished items. But as we inch towards telling all the moms in our lives (including the auntie who raised us, step mom, and yes, dog mom) how much we appreciate them we’ve compiled our most favourite things to do in the city!

IN BLOOM Flowers and Footwear at the Bata Shoe Museum takes a fresh new look at how florals have inspired design and materials around the world. For centuries, florals have been admired for their beauty. Many cultures also consider the symbolism behind flowers. In Japan, the spring cherry blossoms are symbols of beauty, purity, and honour as well as sacrifice. In historic Persian art, the rose symbolized beauty and perfection. This gorgeous exhibition walks through the importance and influence of flowers in both design and material used in shoemaking.

Canadian Modern at the Royal Ontario Museum is a great exhibition that explores Canadian design and craft movement and the impact its made in this world. The exhibition features over 100 examples of culturally significant objects crafted in Canada. From fashion to furniture to electronics and more, each item has a story to tell. Discover the inspiration and the artists/craftspeople behind them and how they’ve made an impact on a global stage. Designers include Alfred Sung, Jeremy Laing, Daphne Odjig, John Fluevog and more.

RUMI at the Aga Khan Museum is opening May 13. This exhibition invites visitors to explore the life and timeless legacy of Jalal al-Din Muhammad Balkhi (aka Rumi). Considered one of the world’s most famous poets this exhibition is a visual exploration of his early years in Central Asia. It also offers a glimpse in his transformation into one of the most fascinating poets.

Reclaimed: Indo-Caribbean HerStories at the Gardiner Museum recently opened. This mixed-media ceramic based exhibition spotlights the power, courage and strength of Indo-Caribbean women past and present. Artist Heidi McKenzie offers insight into the little known histories.

Glowness Lab at Kandl takes candle making to the next level. This guided experience invites participants to explore wellness, mind, body, and spirit. Using mood enhancing essential oils, colour therapy and the healing powers of crystals, mom can customize her own beautiful candle on the spot and ready to take home.

YOGA at the Art Gallery of Ontario is a peaceful way to start the weekend. Several dates available Saturday mornings at 11 am. (must book in advance, ticketed events) Bring your mat and a few other yoga accessories and enjoy a restorative morning yoga session in the Galleria Italia section of the AGO with a registered yoga practitioner, Karmit Ifrah.

Spring in Toronto can be a passing shower or more often than not, a day long drizzle fest. Whether your visiting the city or a resident, there are lots of things you can still do to be inspired. Yep, you don’t need to waste a day being trapped indoors sucking up all the rage on Twitter or getting lost in the abyss of YouTube. Unless you want to of course. Here are 10 things to do in Toronto on a rainy day that are happening NOW (Spring 2023) that are worth your time and effort.

Wolfgang Tillmans: To Look Without Fear at the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO): Tillmans was recently named by Time Magazine as one of the top 100 Most Influential of 2023 and his retrospective exhibition is an incredible collection of his photography and visual works. His images inspires connections and explores conversation on social issues on a personal and global scale. Hot on the heels of his spectacular exhibition at MoMA this is a must see for all ages. Be sure to also catch his visual album in Jackman Hall while you’re there.

IN BLOOM: Florals and Footwear at the Bata Shoe Museum: floral motifs have influenced fashion and design for centuries. Countries globally have incorporated blooms in various ways from textiles and in design. The language of florals and the interpretations is what makes this exhibition seriously fascinating. It also examines how nature plays a part over the history of the shoe including the materials. Beautifully displayed shoes along side descriptions takes visitors on a journey in a fresh appreciation for footwear over the centuries. Here you’ll find stunning historical pieces and more recent Nike and Christian Louboutin.

Toronto is a city filled with beauty, entertainment and art, which offers visitors a unique experience with each visit. Take advantage of a boutique staycation vibe at the Kimpton Saint George. Nestled in the architecturally dynamic landscape of The Annex in Toronto, there are many amenities in arms reach.

UN/REAL: NFT featured in Future Now exhibit

One such amenity is the Bata Shoe Museum, located steps away from the Saint George. The Kimpton and Bata Shoe Museum offers a unique collaboration. The museum is currently featuring the Future Now: Virtual Sneakers to Cutting Edge Kicks exhibit. This exhibit takes audiences through the evolution of shoes from cultures all over the world to futuristic auto-lace and virtual shoes. Bring your phone, through QR Codes, audiences are able to project and interact with virtual shoes. It is a great place to take kids or enjoy an afternoon to yourself exploring the beauty and evolution of shoes!

The experience at the Kimpton Saint George felt personalized from the moment of check-in. The staff were welcoming, offering a fast and easy check-in process and suggestions to hotel events and events taking place in and around Toronto. This evening in particular featured a social hour, wherein complimentary drinks were offered alongside an amazing local soca duo, V.K. Vocal Vybez. The ‘V’ stands for guitarist/singer Vincent Jamal – Jamal is a Bahamian R&B artist, with a recently released album, Solid Conversations; the ‘K’ is for Kimya (that’s Kee-MY-ah) a Vincentian songstress who recently opened for Brian McKnight. Their renditions of popular soca hits filled the 1,500 square foot lounge and lobby of the Kimpton and drew a crowd. This felt like the Bacchanal Social Hour, an obvious ode to Toronto’s Caribbean Carnival aka Caribana. The social hour occurs on a nightly basis between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m.

Guests of the Saint George are offered breakfast options – breakfast time can be booked upon arrival – check with the front desk during the check-in process. Fitness is a priority at the Kimpton Saint George with a state-of-the-art fitness room, accessible from the second floor, now featuring a Peloton, and yoga mats are available in each guest room.

There are plenty of photo opportunities in and around the Kimpton – from the large lobby mirror to the Marble Moon art pieces featured in all guest suites by Ottawa artist and designer, Laura Langford. There are elements of not just Toronto, but celebrations of Canada sewn into the design of the Kimpton Saint George. Take advantage of the unique aesthetic which makes the Saint George its own work of art. Inspiration for the design of the hotel pays homage to the heart and soul of the Annex while highlighting the eclectic eccentricities Toronto has to offer. Details of the hotel, like the single white squirrel figures found in every room, are attributed to providing guests with more insight into landmark Torontonian attractions while adding a whimsical flair of city representation. The overall design and usage of colour provides visitors with a feeling of being in a home-like environment.

Kimpton Saint George Fitness Room

One of the most impressionable features of the Kimpton was the reminder note in the guest suite which offers guests easy access – via room service – to items they may have forgotten or overlooked during packing. The service is quick and adds an extra special element of security and comfort for guests.

The Fortunate Fox is located in the lobby of the Kimpton Saint George and offers an amazing selection of foods and beverages. As a vegetarian, options are often limited, however, the Garden Burger… delicious! Every bite, more delectable than the last. The combination of feta cheese and avocado was incredible. This restaurant was lively throughout the day and evening, offering a dimly lit, intimate environment.

This staycation in the city showcases Toronto from a unique perspective, wherein visitors have the opportunity to enjoy the many attractions Toronto has to offer while playing tourist. There are so many ways to enjoy the Saint George. Guests can’t help but feel welcome by the staff and overall feeling of warmth present while staying at the Kimpton Saint George.
